on Dec. 14th, Day 3 – Caring for Seniors

in Walmart’s “12 Days of Giving”!

   The Walmart 12 Days of Giving Facebook Campaign called for nominations from the community and more than 5,400 nominations and photos were received from Facebook users. The Walmart Foundation reviewed the nominations and selected nonprofits and charities from around the country that focus on providing their communities with basic needs.

   Since 1923, Denver, Colorado has had the unique distinction in the U.S. of having the only in-home nursing care program caring for the poor, sick and elderly – completely free of charge to the patient!  Dominican Sisters Home Health Agency supports the poor, sick and elderly population of Metro Denver with nursing and personal care, nurse case management, pastoral care and friendly visitors, exercise and a food pantry for in-home patients so they can remain safe, healthy and independent at home. 

   Additionally, the charity runs a medical equipment loan program that provides equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, shower benches, hospital beds, etc. to those in need who cannot afford them.  Dominican Sisters also provides Wellness Clinics in several low income senior housing sites around Denver. 

   Our unique charity serves between 1,200 – 1,700 Denver area citizens annually, provides nearly 22,000 in-home visits and over 800 pieces of medical equipment are loaned in the community.  The agency relies on the generosity of the community – individuals, churches, foundations and businesses – as the charity receives no government funding and no insurance, Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement.

   Dominican Sisters Home Health Agency survives on a $1.5 million budget and by keeping 94% of their patients out of nursing homes saves the state and its taxpayers over $20 million each year! 

   Started 88 years ago, our hope is to be here for another 88 years! With the $10,000 grant from the Walmart “12 Days of Giving” Facebook Campaign and continued support from the community, our unique charity will be caring for seniors in Metro Denver for years to come!
