SENIOR DISCOUNTS

As I was waiting in line behind an older gentleman at Wendy's recently, I heard him ask for his senior discount. The girl at the register apologized and charged him less. When I asked the man what the discount was, he told me that seniors over age 55 get 10% off everything on the menu, every day. Being of 'that' age myself, I figured I might as well ask for the discount, too.

This incident prompted me to do some research, and I came across a list of restaurants, supermarkets, department stores, travel deals and other types of offers giving various discounts with different age requirements. I was actually surprised to see how many there are and how some of them start at the young age of 50.

This list may not only be useful for you, but for your friends and family, too.

Dunkin Donuts gives free coffee to people over 55. If you're paying for a cup every day, you might want to start getting it for free.

YOU must ASK for your discount! Read on, it’s a LONG list!

"Age is something that does not matter unless you are a cheese," the actress Billie Burke, best known for her role in The Wizard of Oz as Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, has been quoted as saying. With medical advances and increasing emphasis on adopting healthy lifestyles and attitudes, today, more than ever, those words ring true.

Use it or Lose it

Like muscles that atrophy when not used, your brain needs to work out consistently and take on new challenges, regardless of your age. Learning some-thing new is one of the activities doctors say helps keep your brain young.

Stay active! Walking, gardening, cleaning and appropriate exercise for your age and fitness level help ward off the negative effects of aging to both your body and your brain.

Participate in group activities, including volunteer work. (Just call us, we will find you a perfect activity!)

Being grateful. Take time each day to notice the goodness around you, even during challenging times.

Saving Face

Dermatologists maintain that our skin would be smooth and wrinkle-free and retain its elasticity well into our 80s if it didn’t suffer the negative effects of the sun. Minimize sun damage by wearing a full spectrum sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher that blocks both UVA and UVB rays.

Your diet can have a major impact on how well your skin regenerates. Eat foods that are as close to their natural states as possible. Enjoy plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, and choose whole grains over refined rice, pasta and bread.
